Microsoft is committed to protecting your privacy. This privacy statement explains data collection and use practices of the WindowsGuidedTour.com and WindowsGuidedTour.net sites (the "Site") hosted for Microsoft by Vertigo Software, Inc.; it does not apply to other online or offline Microsoft sites, products or services. By accessing the Site, you are consenting to the information collection and use practices described in this privacy statement.

Collecting Your Personal Information

NOTE: The Registration, Survey and Usage Tracking information is completely optional and is at the discretion of the end-user to provide the system with this information. The Web Site tracking is not optional, but it does not contain any Personally Identifiable Information (PII).

Registration
We will collect personal information if you choose to register the Windows Server 2003 Guided Tour. The personal information we collect includes your first and last name, occupation, job role, work or home address, city, state, country, postal code, email address, and phone number. We also optionally ask the following questions: number of PCs in their company or organization and whether or not their company or organization is planning to upgrade to Windows Server 2003 and if so, when?

Survey
The Windows Server 2003 Guided Tour also provides the ability to participate in an optional survey. The survey questions asked are as follows: how would you rate the guided tour, how would you rate the usefulness of the content, how would you rate the usefulness of the video demonstrations, and optionally provide us why you rated the content the way you did.

Usage Tracking
If you chose to participate in the "Customer Experience Improvement Program", we anonymously track the following information: count each viewer in an aggregate number of Viewers reporting usage data, version of the Guided Tour reporting data, version of the Operating System the Guided Tour is running on, version of Internet Explorer used with the Guided Tour, the number of times each module in the Guided Tour was viewed, and the number of times each page in the Guided Tour was viewed.

Web site
This site may collect certain anonymous information about your visit, such as the name of the Internet service provider and the Internet Protocol (IP) address through which you access the Internet; the date and time you access the Site; the pages that you access while at the Site and the Internet address of the Web site from which you linked directly to our site. None of this information is personally-identifiable. This anonymous information is used to help improve the Site, analyze trends, and administer the Site, and is discarded when this process is completed.

Use of Your Personal Information

The personal information Microsoft collects will be used to provide Microsoft the ability to contact those customers who have expressed and interest with talking to a Microsoft representative. This may include using the personal information to provide you with important information about the product or service that you are using, including critical updates and notifications; to improve the product or service; and to provide you with more effective customer service. The Site also uses the information it collects to make the Site easier to use by eliminating the need for you to repeatedly enter the same information or by customizing the Site to your particular preference or interests.

Microsoft occasionally hires other companies to provide limited services on our behalf, such as packaging, mailing and delivering prizes, answering customer questions about products and services, sending postal mail, and sending information about our products, special offers, and other new services. Appendix A: Data Collected

Registration
If the user chooses to register, we collect:

  • First Name
  • Last Name
  • Company Name
  • Occupation
  • Job Role - Difference between occupation and job role is that occupation allows the user to type in anything they want, job role are the defined categories that are interesting to us.
  • Address Line 1 & 2
  • City
  • State - All are now included and some U.S. territories.
  • Country - We have a large list in now.
  • Postal Code - Changed name from Zip Code, should allow entry of nearly any Postal Code format.
  • Email Address
  • Phone Number
  • Optional Questions
    • How many PCs in their organization - We use category breakdowns that have been provided.
    • Is your organization planning to upgrade to Windows Server 2003? If so, when? - We use time segments that have been provided.
Survey
Using the Guided Tour will eventually trigger a prompt to for the user to complete a short survey. We don’t link the survey with Usage Tracking or Registration at all. We ask the following questions and track one piece of data:
  • We aggregately count the number of users that have ever completed the survey.
  • Questions (1-9 scale):
    • Overall, how would you rate the Guided Tour?
    • How would you rate the usefulness of the content?
    • How would you rate the usefulness of the video demonstrations?
    • Tell us why you rated the content this way. (optional) - This is a free-form text entry box.
Usage Tracking
If the user chooses to participate in the "Customer Experience Improvement Program", we generate a unique Id for the instance of the viewer which is not related in any way to Registration or the Survey, the identifier is only used to properly update the database without skewing the numbers for the following pieces of information:
  • Count each viewer in an aggregate number of Viewers reporting usage data
  • Version of the Guided Tour reporting data
  • Version of the Operating System the Guided Tour is running on
  • Version of Internet Explorer used with the Guided Tour
  • The number of times each module in the Guided Tour was viewed - e.g. the Shadow Copies of Shared Folder module
  • The number of times each page in the Guided Tour was viewed - e.g. how many times Step 1 of Shadow Copies of Shared Folders was viewed
